Chinese Government Approves AVS and Waives License Fee

The Ministry of Information Industry in China has approved the digital broadcasting system based on China's home-grown standard AVS (Audio-Video coding Standard), which is said to be equal to MPEG4 and H.264 in coding efficiency and will be used mainly in satellite TV and IPTV. Meanwhile, The CASICT (Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Computing Technology) has announced that they will not charge any license fee for AVS core IP. CASICT has also completed the streaming media test based on AVS-M with Shanghai Dragon Mobile Information.
